Rue Bailleul

Barely a block from the Louvre itself, this lovely contemporary apartment on the quiet Rue Bailleul could not be better located to discover the wonders of Paris or revisit favorite spots. The former royal palace is, of course, world renowned for its staggering collectiosn of art and sculpture. Steps away from the apartment is the Cour Carrée, where there is an entrance into the museum which might as well be secret – the lines of tourists from all nations of the world always form in the courtyard where the entrance from the striking yet still controversial pyramid of I.M. Pei is found. Rue de Rivoli, with its parade of luxury hotels and Rue Saint-Honoré, with its collection of the most luxurious branded boutiques, are the two streets that parallel rue Bailleul on either side. The metro stop at Louvre Rivoli is less than two minutes’ walk away, with the #7 line at Pont Neuf about five minutes’ walk. La Samaritaine department store, with its fabulous view of Paris from the rooftop terrace, is also around the corner. The location is truly perfect for any visitor to Paris, and having the imposing façade of the Louvre as a landmark for one’s own apartment is undeniably special.

The apartment comprises 51 square meters (600 square feet) and was completely renovated in 2007 and 2008. Access is through a courtyard from a street door and up one flight of stairs (the building has no elevator). Upon entering the apartment, which is open-plan with the original plank hardwood floors throughout, there is an immediate impression of natural light from multiple exposures overlooking the building’s central courtyard.

The right-hand wall of windows curves from the entry, past the dining room, to the living room. Custom built-in shelves line the lower portion of the wall below its windows. Stylish accordion shades allow just the right amount of light in from the courtyard to illuminate the gleaming floors and modern surfaces of the kitchen. A svelte aluminum table with four chairs separates the entry from the kitchen. Green lights accent the white cabinets and grey countertops. Along with good counter space and exceptional storage from numerous cabinets and deep drawers, the kitchen offers a four-burner electric range with oven below, refrigerator and small dishwasher, all by Miele. To the right is the living area, dominated by a gray sectional sofa. Two armchairs round out the seating area, and a flat-panel television with satellite reception, including CNN and BBC, is mounted on the wall. Thanks to an ingenious bracket with extendable arm the TV can be positioned for viewing from the dining room and kitchen.

Sliding doors off the dining room table conceal the bedroom and large bathroom, which can be accessed either from the common area or by the bedroom. More custom-made cabinetry lines two walls of the bedroom, creating a headboard for the low double (140 cm, 55” across) bed, as well as bedside shelves. The wall behind the bed is a stunning work of art, a hand-gilded surface that gives the impression of a shimmering wall. There are closets on either side of the door to the main room, with both hanging space and shelves. The bathroom is quite spacious for an apartment of this size and the lighting is bright and tasteful, as it is throughout the property. The bathroom equipment includes a large glass shower stall, a single sink with space for personal affairs and a WC.

Suitable for an individual or one couple, this smart, trendy property offers a quiet accommodation in the heart of a bustling city.
